Looking Back on the Jubilee Year of Hope – Moving Forward in the Mission of Proclaiming the Gospel

The Jubilee Year of Hope is a special moment of grace for the Church, in which all the faithful are invited to contemplate and live out Hope in God—the One who is faithful and merciful. This Jubilee is not merely a milestone in the Church’s liturgical history, but a spiritual journey that leads us back to the very source of our faith, rekindling in each heart the light of Hope so that we may continue our journey amid a world filled with instability, challenges, and deep longing.

As we look back on the Jubilee Year of Hope, we clearly recognize that God continues to be present and active in human history, even when people easily fall into weariness, confusion, or discouragement before the many upheavals of our time. Christian hope is not an illusion or a superficial consolation; rather, it is a profound conviction that God loves humanity and never abandons this world. As Saint Paul affirms: “Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit” (Rom 5:5).

Throughout the Jubilee Year, many people rediscovered the joy of living their faith. Pilgrimages, communal prayer, quiet works of charity, moments of forgiveness and reconciliation—all became signs of Hope growing within the heart of the Church. In everyday life, within families, communities, and in each act of service, Hope is expressed through trust, perseverance, and love.

Yet Hope is not a destination; it is the driving force that urges us to move forward in our mission. As the Jubilee Year comes to a close, we are not permitted to remain at the level of fleeting spiritual emotions. Instead, we are called to transform this Hope into renewed vitality for the mission of proclaiming the Gospel. The Church of Christ is continually sent forth to bring the Gospel of salvation to all peoples. Each believer, within his or her own vocation, is likewise invited to become a “sower of Hope” in the world.

Proclaiming the Gospel today is not limited to verbal preaching alone, but is manifested above all through the witness of a life permeated with Hope. Christians are called to recognize God’s light even in darkness, to trust in love amid suffering, and to hope even when everything seems to be falling apart. In a world where many have lost faith, Christians are called to be witnesses of Hope—through a loving presence, a righteous way of life, and a limitless capacity for forgiveness.

The mission of evangelization today demands that we step beyond our comfort zones and go out to the peripheries—where people are wounded, forgotten, or searching for meaning. It is precisely there that we encounter Christ in the poor and the vulnerable. Proclaiming the Gospel in the spirit of Hope means bringing them the light of Christ—a light that warms, enlightens, and heals.

Religious men and women, priests, catechists, and lay faithful—each has a share in this common mission. For religious, Hope is the strength that enables fidelity to one’s vocation amid dryness or trials of consecrated life. For the laity, Hope is the guiding light in family life, work, and social relationships. For young people, Hope is the flame that inspires commitment, creativity, and service in the spirit of the Gospel. And for those who suffer, Hope is a refuge—a reminder that God remains with them in every circumstance.

Christian Hope is never an escape from reality. On the contrary, it is the strength that empowers us to engage more deeply with the world, transforming it from within through love and truth. When Hope is lived and expressed through concrete actions, it becomes the most eloquent proclamation of the Gospel of salvation. A smile amid suffering, a gesture of compassion, a sincere act of forgiveness—all can become living proclamations that bear witness to Christ, who is the Hope of humanity.

As we step forward from the Jubilee Year of Hope, we are invited to continue the journey with renewed conviction. Though the world still bears the marks of war, poverty, injustice, and division, we believe that the light of Christ is stronger than darkness, and His love greater than all sin. We do not walk alone, for the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of Hope—remains with the Church, guiding, strengthening, and empowering us to bear courageous witness to the Gospel.

May the Jubilee Year of Hope not close as merely a liturgical event, but become the beginning of a new era—an era of renewed missionary zeal, living witness, and communities filled with faith and love. May each believer, carrying the light of Hope in his or her heart, follow Christ—the Hope of humanity—so that together with Him we may sow peace, love, and the joy of salvation throughout the world.
